Demetri Geroff, c1911, (1913). Artist: Tryggve Gran
Demetri Geroff, c1911, (1913). Dog driver Dmitrii Gerof (or Girev). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Demetri Geroff, a dog driver named Dmitrii Gerof (or Girev), during the final expedition of renowned British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott. The Terra Nova Expedition, also known as the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), embarked on their journey from London on 1 June 1910 with a diverse team of scientists and experts. Scott's primary objectives were to continue his scientific research initiated during the Discovery Expedition in 1901-04 and to be the first person to reach the geographic South Pole. Accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers, and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, Scott finally reached their destination on 17 January 1912. However, they were met with heart-wrenching disappointment upon discovering that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had already beaten them there by a month. Tragically delayed by blizzards and facing dwindling supplies, Scott and his remaining team members perished at the end of March. It would take another eight months before their bodies and diaries were discovered. The photograph is taken from "Scott's Last Expedition". Volume II published in London in 1913 by Smith Elder & Co. , providing an invaluable visual record of this historic endeavor. This image serves as a poignant reminder of both human ambition and nature's unforgiving power within one of history's most challenging exploration missions.
