The departure of French troops to Madagascar, Paris, 1895. Artist: Henri Meyer
The departure of French troops to Madagascar, Paris, 1895. France invaded Madagascar in 1883 in what became known as the first Franco-Hova War (Hova being the name of the islands Merina aristocrats), seeking to restore property that had been confiscated from French residents. Prior to the French intervention Madagascar was an independent kingdom ruled by the Merina dynasty, but after the war, increasing French interference meant another war broke out in 1895. By the end of the Second Franco-Hova War in 1896 France ruled the island as a protectorate, the monarchy had been abolished and the royal family exiled to Algeria. An illustration from Le Petit Journal, 24th March 1895

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that captures a significant moment in history. Painted by the talented artist Henri Meyer, this artwork depicts an event during the first Franco-Hova War. In 1883, France invaded Madagascar with the aim of reclaiming confiscated property from French residents. Prior to this intervention, Madagascar was an independent kingdom ruled by the Merina dynasty. However, as French interference increased over time, tensions escalated and another war broke out in 1895. By the end of the Second Franco-Hova War in 1896, France had established its rule over Madagascar as a protectorate. The monarchy was abolished and the royal family exiled to Algeria. This image represents not only a military departure but also symbolizes colonialism and warfare during the late 19th century. The vibrant colors and attention to detail bring this historical moment to life. As we observe soldiers marching through Paris streets amidst a crowd of onlookers, we are reminded of both the power dynamics at play and their impact on ordinary people's lives. This remarkable print serves as a visual reminder of how countries like France expanded their influence across continents through military conquests during this era. It stands as a testament to Henri Meyer's artistic talent while providing us with valuable insights into our shared past.
