The Devils Punch Bowl, an Empty Cwm in the South-West Corner of Granite Harbour, 1912, (1913)

The Devils Punch Bowl, an Empty Cwm in the South-West Corner of Granite Harbour, 1912, (1913). Pyramid tent pitched on shingle next to frozen inlet with cliff face in the background. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume II. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

The Devils Punch Bowl, an Empty Cwm in the South-West Corner of Granite Harbour, 1912

EDITORS COMMENTS
captures a poignant moment from Captain Robert Falcon Scott's ill-fated Terra Nova Expedition. In this haunting photograph, taken by one of the expedition members, a pyramid tent stands resiliently on shingle next to a frozen inlet. The backdrop showcases a majestic cliff face that seems to guard the desolate landscape. Scott's final expedition aimed not only to reach the South Pole but also to continue scientific research in Antarctica. With a diverse team comprising geologists, zoologists, surgeons, photographers, and more, they set out from London in June 1910. However, their dreams were shattered when they discovered that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had beaten them to their ultimate goal. Trapped by blizzards and dwindling supplies during their return journey from the pole, Scott and his remaining companions tragically perished at the end of March 1912. It would be eight months before their bodies and diaries were found. This evocative image serves as a testament to both the indomitable spirit of exploration and the harsh realities faced by early Antarctic adventurers. It stands as a reminder of Captain Scott's unwavering determination despite insurmountable odds and pays tribute to those who lost their lives in pursuit of discovery.
