Disembarking the Ponies, c1910– 1913, (1913). The ponies are led onto the ice from the Terra Nova. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott led this final expedition with a diverse team of scientists and experts, aiming to continue his scientific work in Antarctica and become the first to reach the South Pole. In this image by artist Herbert Ponting, we witness an important scene as ponies are carefully led onto the ice from the Terra Nova ship. The ponies played a crucial role in transporting supplies across treacherous terrains during their journey towards the South Pole. Little did they know that their ultimate goal had already been achieved by Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen's team just one month prior. Despite facing blizzards and dwindling supplies, Scott and his remaining crew members reached the South Pole on January 17th, 1912. Tragically, upon arrival at their destination, they discovered Amundsen's triumph. Delayed by adverse weather conditions and running out of provisions on their return journey, Scott and his companions succumbed to exhaustion and extreme cold at the end of March. Their bodies were found eight months later along with poignant diaries documenting their heroic struggle against nature's forces. This evocative photograph serves as a testament to both Scott's determination for scientific exploration and his tragic fate in one of history's most renowned expeditions.
