Dr. Simpson Sending Up a Balloon, 1911, (1913). Artist: Herbert Ponting

Dr. Simpson Sending Up a Balloon, 1911, (1913). Meteorologist George Simpson (1878-1965) took detailed measurements in order to predict the best possible conditions for Scotts journey to the Pole. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume I. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print titled "Dr. Simpson Sending Up a Balloon, 1911" taken by artist Herbert Ponting in 1913, we witness the meticulous preparations made by meteorologist George Simpson for Captain Robert Falcon Scott's ill-fated journey to the South Pole. As part of the Terra Nova Expedition (1910-1913), which aimed to continue scientific research and conquer the geographic South Pole, Scott assembled a diverse team of experts including geologists, zoologists, surgeons, engineers, and physicists. Among them was Dr. Edward Wilson and meteorologist George Simpson. In this particular scene frozen in time, Dr. Simpson can be seen releasing a balloon into the vast Antarctic sky while meticulously recording measurements. These detailed observations were crucial for predicting favorable weather conditions that would aid Scott's perilous quest. Tragically, despite their valiant efforts and enduring extreme hardships along the way, Scott and his remaining team members arrived at the South Pole on January 17th, 1912 only to discover that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had beaten them there by a month. Weighed down by blizzards and dwindling supplies during their return journey from disappointment at not being first to reach their objective turned into an epic struggle for survival. It was not until eight months later that their bodies were discovered alongside poignant diaries documenting their heroic but ultimately tragic expedition. This haunting image serves as a poignant reminder of both human determination in pursuit of knowledge and exploration as well as nature's unforgiving power over even our most ambitious endeavors.
