EDITORS COMMENTS
Du Bosphore a L'Adriatique; Debarquement a la Pointe du Serail, a Constantinople, le 22 novembre, 1918: A Historic Moment in the First World War This photograph captures a significant moment in the First World War, as General Louis Franchet d'Esperey, commander of the Allied forces in Salonika, arrives at Constantinople (now Istanbul, Turkey) on board the French warship "Patrie." The image, titled "Du Bosphore a L'Adriatique; Debarquement a la Pointe du Serail, a Constantinople, le 22 novembre," was published in "L'Album de la Guerre 1914-1919, Volume 2" by L'Illustration, Paris, in 1924. As General Franchet d'Esperey disembarks at the Pointe du Serail in Constantinople, he is greeted by Admiral Amet, the French high commissioner, General Topart, commander of one of the French divisions that captured the Sokol fortress, and Djeval Pasha, the chief of the Turkish general staff, representing the Ottoman government. The arrival of the victorious Allied forces marked the end of the Ottoman Empire's involvement in the war and the beginning of the post-war occupation of Istanbul. The photograph shows a group of soldiers and military commanders gathered on the dock, with the backdrop of the Bosphorus Strait and the city skyline of Constantinople. The image is a testament to the historical significance of the event and the end of the First World War in the region. The print, which is now part of The Print Collector's collection, captures the essence of a momentous occasion in military history, with the victorious Allied forces arriving in Constantinople to bring an end to the war and occupy the territory. The image is a reminder of the pivotal role played by France and its allies in shaping the political landscape of the region during the early 20th century.
