EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking head-and-shoulders portrait captures the wisdom and dignity of an Oglala man named Eagle Elk, also known as He Xa Wan ba li, in the early 1900s. The photograph, taken by renowned ethnographer Edward Sheriff Curtis around 1907, provides a glimpse into the traditional apparel and cultural heritage of the Plains Indians during a time of significant change. Eagle Elk wears a traditional Sioux headdress adorned with eagle feathers, a symbol of power and respect in Native American culture. His clothing, which includes a fringed dress and leggings, represents the intricate and beautiful designs that were once common among the Plains tribes. The setting of the portrait is unclear, but it is believed that Curtis captured this image during his extensive travels documenting Native American life for the US Congressional Library. Eagle Elk, an elderly man, gazes away from the camera, adding an air of mystery and introspection to the image. This photograph is a valuable ethnographic and anthropological record of a time when traditional Native American ways of life were rapidly disappearing. Curtis's work, which included thousands of photographs and recordings of Native American languages and stories, remains an important contribution to our understanding of the rich cultural heritage of the First Nations peoples of North America.
