The flying ship, c1709 (1919)
The flying ship, c1709 (1919). On 17 April 1709 Friar Bartolomeu de Gusmao, a Portuguese Jesuit priest and naturalist, petitioned King John V of Portugal, claiming to have invented a flying machine. The King granted Gusmao the sole right to build the device and if it succeeded, great academic acclaim. However The Church in Rome strongly requested him to desist from such acts of heresy. From The Wonder Book of Aircraft for Boys and Girls, edited by Harry Golding. [Ward. Lock & Co. Limited, London, Melbourne and Toronto, 1919]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The flying ship" from 1709, a remarkable invention by Portuguese Jesuit priest Friar Bartolomeu de Gusmao. In this historic moment captured in time, we witness the intersection of science, innovation, and religion. Friar Bartolomeu boldly approached King John V of Portugal with his groundbreaking creation - a flying machine. The King granted him exclusive rights to build the device, accompanied by the promise of great academic recognition if successful. However, this audacious endeavor faced opposition from the Church in Rome who deemed it heretical. The image portrays an airship suspended in mid-air against a backdrop of clear blue skies and radiant sunlight. A flag bearing Portugal's national emblem proudly flutters atop the vessel as a symbol of its origin. This visionary design represents an amalgamation of astronomy and transportation concepts prevalent during that era. Etched meticulously onto paper, this monochrome masterpiece transports us back to the 18th century when dreams took flight amidst societal constraints. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity and our ceaseless pursuit of progress. "The flying ship" print is not merely an artifact; it encapsulates both historical significance and artistic brilliance. Its presence evokes curiosity about how far we have come since those pioneering days while also inspiring us to push boundaries even further in our own time.
