Forest of Sitka Island (northwest coast of America), 19th century. One of 65 lithographs that were included in the volume of maps published after the round-the-world voyage of the corvette Seniavin commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I and carried out in 1826-29 under the command of Captain Fedor Litke (the Russian version of the name of Count Friedrich Lu¨tke, a Baltic German). The expedition began in Kronstadt (the main imperial Russian naval base near Saint Petersburg where Russian circumnavigations typically began and ended); it then traveled around Cape Horn to the Pacific Ocean. EDITORS COMMENTS
Forest of Sitka Island, Northwest Coast of America, 19th Century: A Lithograph from the Seniavin Expedition This black and white lithograph, titled "Forest of Sitka Island," is an exquisite representation of the natural beauty of the Northwest Coast of America during the 19th century. Created by Russian artists Alexander Postels and Godefroy Engelmann, this image is one of 65 lithographs that were included in the volume of maps published after the circumnavigation voyage of the Russian corvette Seniavin, commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I and led by Captain Fedor Litke (also known as Count Friedrich Lu¨tke). The expedition, which began in Kronstadt, Russia, and traveled around Cape Horn to the Pacific Ocean, was one of many scientific naval surveys conducted by Russia in the first part of the 19th century. This lithograph captures the stunning evergreen forest of Sitka Island, located on the coast of Alaska. The image showcases the rich, diverse flora, including towering trees, fallen logs, and moss-covered ground. In the foreground, local indigenous people are depicted meeting with European explorers, symbolizing the meeting of frontiers. The landscape is dotted with mountains, adding to the breathtaking scenery. The lithograph also features a man with a gun, likely a member of the expedition, adding a sense of adventure and discovery. This historical artwork, with its intricate details and accurate depiction of the natural world, is a testament to the artistic and scientific achievements of the Seniavin Expedition. The lithograph is now part of the collections at the Library of Congress, making it an essential piece of heritage art and a valuable resource for scholars and historians studying the exploration of the Americas during the 19th century.
