EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative engraving by Robert Dunkarton, titled 'Frederick, King of Bohemia; Obit 1632', is an poignant reminder of the short-lived reign of Frederick V, Elector Palatine and King of Bohemia. The image, taken from Samuel Woodburn's 'Portraits of characters illustrious in British History from the beginning of the reign of Henry the Eighth to the end of the reign of James the Second' published in London in 1815, depicts Frederick in the mourning clothes and apparel of the time, wearing a black neck ruff and holding a black hat in his hand. The somber attire reflects the political turmoil and the tragic end of his reign. Frederick V, also known as 'Frederick the Winter King', was elected King of Bohemia in 1619, following the death of the childless Holy Roman Emperor Matthias. However, his election was not recognized by the Emperor's successor, Ferdinand II, who saw Frederick as a threat to his own power. In 1620, Ferdinand invaded Bohemia, leading to the Battle of White Mountain and the defeat of the Protestant forces. Frederick was deposed and forced to flee the country. The engraving captures the essence of Frederick's regal bearing and the dignity of his character, despite the circumstances of his abdication. The image is a testament to the political events of the 17th century, and the power struggles that shaped the Holy Roman Empire and Europe as a whole. The intricate detail of the engraving, from the folds of Frederick's clothing to the ornate design of his armor, adds to the historical significance of the image and serves as a reminder of the rich history of European monarchy.
