Garibaldian volunteers - from a photograph by Herr Fehrenbachs, 1860. Creator: Unknown
Garibaldian volunteers - from a photograph by Herr Fehrenbachs, 1860. Sergeant Sparkhall, Major Styles, and Lieut. Ceuto, of the Glasgow company. Major Styles...wears the Crimean medal; and, from his unceasing energy in raising the volunteers and assisting Garibaldi in his great cause, he will be remembered for many years to come...A love of adventure, as much, perhaps, as a love of freedom, is actuating our countrymen to volunteer for Garibaldi and to leave their ties and kindred at home to fight for the liberty of a foreign people. Last week no less a number than 800 volunteers...embarked...for Southern Italy...The majority of the volunteers...are men of middle-class position in society; and in very many instances lucrative employment has been given up for the purpose of accepting service in the Garibaldian corps. Many, also, of those who are now in Italy are men of independent means, who go out solely for the excitement of taking part in actual warfare...Garibaldi has a very high opinion of his English volunteers, and has so expressed himself through the medium of his Aide-de-Camp, late Captain and now Major Styles. This is a proof...that Englishmen never fail to maintain their prestige for military prowess and indomitable courage'. From "Illustrated London News", 1860

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken by Herr Fehrenbachs in 1860, immortalizes three Garibaldian volunteers, Sergeant Sparkhall, Major Styles, and Lieut. Ceuto, of the Glasgow company. Major Styles, adorned with the Crimean medal, is remembered for his relentless efforts in raising volunteers and supporting Garibaldi in his noble cause. The love of adventure and freedom have motivated countless men from the United Kingdom to join Garibaldi's ranks, leaving behind their families and livelihoods to fight for the liberty of a foreign people. Last week, an impressive number of 800 volunteers embarked for Southern Italy, eager to make their mark in history. The volunteers hailed from various walks of life, with many abandoning lucrative employment to serve in the Garibaldian corps. Moreover, several volunteers were men of independent means, driven by the thrill of participating in actual warfare. Garibaldi holds his English volunteers in high regard, as expressed through his Aide-de-Camp, Major Styles. This esteemed recognition underscores the unwavering reputation of Englishmen for their military prowess and indomitable courage.
