Three generations of women, 1814

Three generations of women, 1814. A cottager is spinning wool, using a simple wheel without treadle, while her mother reels yarn. Her daughter stirs a cast iron pot standing on an open fire. There is no staircase and the upper floor of the cottage is reached by a ladder. The floor is of flagstones and the casement windows are fitted with leaded lights with diamond panes cut from crown glass. Homeworkers such as these would either spin wool from their own sheep, or would be supplied with fleeces by an agent who would pay them by piecework. From The Costume of Yorkshire by George Walker. (Leeds, 1814)

Three Generations of Women, 1814 - A Glimpse into Rural Life

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This photo print, captured by George Walker of Seacroft in 1814, offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives of three generations of women during the early 19th century. The scene depicts a quaint cottage interior where each woman is engaged in different tasks that reflect their roles and responsibilities. In the foreground, we see a cottager diligently spinning wool using a simple wheel without treadle. Her mother stands beside her, skillfully reeling yarn onto wooden spools. Meanwhile, the youngest generation represented by her daughter tends to an open fire with a cast iron pot simmering on top. The rustic charm of this setting is further enhanced by details such as flagstone flooring and casement windows fitted with leaded lights featuring diamond panes cut from crown glass. Notably absent is any form of staircase; instead, access to the upper floor is achieved through an old-fashioned ladder. These hardworking women were often homeworkers who either spun wool from their own sheep or received fleeces from agents who paid them based on piecework completed. Their dedication and industry played vital roles in sustaining England's woollen industry during this era. Through this remarkable image, George Walker invites us to appreciate not only the laborious nature of their work but also provides insight into rural life in Yorkshire at that time. It serves as a testament to the resilience and ingenuity displayed by these female workers within Britain's evolving industrial landscape.
