In this striking photograph by Harris & Ewing, Secretary of the Navy Josephus Daniels (1862-1948) stands before a fireplace in the Capitol Building, holding a portrait of his predecessor, George E. Badger (1795-1866). Badger served as Secretary of the Navy from 1841 to 1846, making him the first civilian to hold the position. Daniels, who served from 1913 to 1921, is known for his modernization of the Navy and his efforts to make it a more professional and efficient institution. The mantelpiece above the fireplace is adorned with various antique items, including a sword believed to belong to John Paul Jones (1747-1792), a legendary naval hero of the American Revolution. The portrait of Badger, which hangs above the sword, adds an historical touch to the scene. Daniels' wife, Martha Ewing Daniels (1873-1953), stands to the side, looking on. The photograph, taken in the 1910s, is a testament to the continuity and tradition of the Office of the Secretary of the Navy. The photograph was taken by Harris & Ewing, a prominent Washington, D.C. photography studio that operated from 1910 to 1955. The studio was founded by George W. Harris (1868-1933) and Martha Ewing Harris (1872-1941), and later run by their daughter, Martha Ewing Newcombe (1902-1986), and her husband, Guy Newcombe (1898-1972). The Harris & Ewing Collection, which includes over 150,000 glass negatives and 25,000 prints, is now housed in the Library of Congress. This photograph is a valuable historical record of the men and women who have served as Secretaries of the Navy, and the traditions and artifacts that have shaped the institution over the years. It is a reminder of the important role that the Navy has played in American history, and the dedication of the individuals who have led it.
