EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled "Gilyachka in a Suit Made of Fish Skin" (1865-1871), is a remarkable image from the collection of Russian photographer V.V. Lanin. The photograph is part of an album containing 154 images, presented to the Imperial Public Library of St. Petersburg upon Lanin's return from the Amur region. The photograph features a native woman named Gilyachka, dressed in an extraordinary attire made entirely of fish skin. The suit, which covers her torso and arms, is intricately designed, showcasing the skill and creativity of the indigenous people of the Far East. Gilyachka's hair is styled in a middle parting, with her hair pulled back into a centre parting, and she wears earrings and a necklace made of what appears to be shells or bones. Her direct gaze and the slight smile on her face convey a sense of pride and confidence. The photograph is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the indigenous peoples of the Far East during the 19th century. It offers a glimpse into their unique way of life, their traditional clothing, and their connection to nature. The image is also a reminder of the meeting of frontiers between the Russian and indigenous cultures, which is evident in the fusion of traditional and Western elements in the photograph. Overall, this photograph is an important contribution to the fields of anthropology, ethnography, and ethnology, providing valuable insights into the history and culture of the Far East during this period.
