EDITORS COMMENTS
Goldi, a native man from the upper reaches of the Usuri River, captured in an oval-shaped, photograph taken by V.V. Lanin between 1865 and 1871. Lanin, a local photographer from the Far East, documented various aspects of life in the Amur region during the second half of the 1860s and 1870s. This image is part of an album of 154 photographs that were presented as a gift to the Imperial Public Library of St. Petersburg upon Myl'nikov's return from the region. Goldi is depicted seated cross-legged, wearing traditional ethnic clothing. His hair is shaved except for a topknot, and he sports a simple, high-collared shirt and loose trousers. The man's posture is calm and relaxed, with his hands resting on his knees. Goldi's expression is serious, and his eyes meet the viewer's gaze, offering a glimpse into the daily life of the indigenous peoples of Manchuria and Siberia during this period. This photograph is a valuable historical record of the meeting of frontiers between European and Asian cultures, and the diverse ethnic groups that inhabited the region. It also showcases the rich heritage of traditional clothing and hairstyles that have long been a part of the region's cultural heritage. The oval shape of the photograph adds a unique and intriguing visual element, making it a standout piece in any collection of historical or ethnographic photography.
