Grand Banquet to the Lord Mayor of London, at Hastings, 1850. Creator: Unknown
Grand Banquet to the Lord Mayor of London, at Hastings, [Sussex], 1850. The banquet took place in an elegant room, embellished with statues of the Muses. On a table, in the centre of the room, stood...the vast silver punch-bowl presented by the Barons who attended the coronation of King George II. and Queen Caroline...The more distinguished of the guests occupied a table...situated on a slightly elevated dais. Behind and above them were the national colours and the corporation arms. [The banquet] was provided by Mr. Carswell, of the Swan Hotel, assisted by Messrs. Ring and Brymer...'. The Mayor of Hastings welcomed Thomas Farncomb...as an honourable merchant and banker; we welcome you especially to-day as the chief magistrate of the first city in the world, and as the first Sussex man who has ever held that proud office. (Loud cheers.)'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, entitled 'Grand Banquet to the Lord Mayor of London, at Hastings, [Sussex], 1850,' showcases an impressive gathering of distinguished guests in an elegant banquet hall. The room is adorned with statues of the Muses and a vast silver punch-bowl, presented by the Barons at the coronation of King George II and Queen Caroline, takes center stage on a table. The more prominent guests are seated on a slightly elevated dais, with the national colors and corporation arms displayed behind and above them. The banquet was meticulously prepared by Mr. Carswell of the Swan Hotel, with assistance from Messrs. Ring and Brymer. The Mayor of Hastings warmly welcomed Thomas Farncomb, an honorable merchant and banker, to the banquet, especially acknowledging his new position as the first Sussex man to hold the esteemed office of Lord Mayor of London. The room was illuminated by gas lighting and candlelight, creating an inviting and sophisticated atmosphere. The guests, dressed in their finest attire, exchanged hearty cheers and toasts, symbolizing the old boys network and camaraderie of the occasion.
