Ground Plan of the Building for the Great Industrial Exhibition, to be erected in Hyde-Park, 1850. Creator: Unknown
Ground Plan of the Building for the Great Industrial Exhibition, to be erected in Hyde-Park, [London], 1850. The plot of ground...is on the south side of Hyde-park, between the Kensington-road and that part of the park known as Rotten-row; and much nonsensical correspondence has lately been in some of the daily journals respecting the injury which will be done to this portion of the Park by the erection of the building, the enormous amount of traffic which will be hereabouts...and great complaints have been made that some of the trees must be removed. These objections are easily disposed of, for the plot of ground is the very best which could possibly have been selected for the purpose, from its contiguity to the high-road...[we] noticed that the only trees marked for destruction are some half-dozen small ones - the more venerable and larger trees being most religiously preserved...'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This ground plan depicts the proposed design for the building to be erected in Hyde Park, London, for the Great Industrial Exhibition of 1850. The location of the plot, situated on the south side of the park between Kensington-road and Rotten-row, has been a subject of much controversy. Critics have expressed concern over the potential damage to the park, with fears of extensive traffic and the removal of trees. However, the selection of this site was deemed ideal due to its proximity to the high-road, ensuring easy access for visitors. Despite the apprehensions, the plan reveals that only a handful of small trees are marked for removal. The larger and more venerable trees are meticulously preserved, as evidenced by the meticulous detail in the plan. The design itself is a testament to the architectural prowess of the time, with a grand entrance, expansive halls, and intricate layout for the exhibition spaces. The Great Industrial Exhibition was an opportunity for the world to showcase their technological advancements and innovations. The event attracted visitors from all corners of the globe, making it a significant moment in the history of industrialization. This ground plan offers a unique glimpse into the meticulous planning that went into creating this grand spectacle, and serves as a reminder of the ingenuity and ambition of the Victorian era.
