This One Hasn t. c1911, (1913). Artist: Herbert Ponting
This One Hasn t. c1911, (1913). One of a pair of images, the other of which is captioned This Penguin Has An Industrious Mate, and shows a penguin on a well built nest. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. This One Hasn't
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a poignant print captured by artist Herbert Ponting during the final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott. Taken in c1911, this image forms part of a pair, with the other titled "This Penguin Has An Industrious Mate" depicting a penguin on a well-built nest. The Terra Nova Expedition, also known as the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), aimed to continue scientific research and be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Led by Scott, the team consisted of various experts including geologists, zoologists, surgeons, photographers, engineers, ski experts, meteorologists and physicists. On 17 January 1912, after enduring treacherous conditions and delays caused by blizzards en route to their objective point at the South Pole, Scott and his companions - Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers, and Petty Officer Edgar Evans - finally reached their destination. However, they were met with heartbreak as they discovered that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had already beaten them there by a month. Tragically stranded due to dwindling supplies and harsh weather conditions on their return journey from the Pole, Scott's team perished at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were discovered eight months later. "This One Hasn't" encapsulates both hope and despair; it serves as a reminder of human resilience in extreme environments while evoking deep sadness for those who lost their lives pursuing scientific discovery in one of Earth's most unforgiving landscapes.
