Heavy Pack in which the Ship Was Held Up, 1912, (1913). Artist: Herbert Ponting
Heavy Pack in which the Ship Was Held Up Whilst Endeavouring To Rescue The Northern Party, 1912, (1913). Heavy pancake ice with floes, which prevented the Terra Nova from getting to expedition members, who were forced to spend months living in a cave surviving on meagre rations and seal meat. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Heavy Pack in which the Ship Was Held Up, 1912" captures a pivotal moment during Captain Robert Falcon Scott's ill-fated Terra Nova Expedition. Taken by renowned photographer Herbert Ponting, this image showcases the treacherous conditions that hindered the ship from reaching expedition members who were stranded in Antarctica. The photograph depicts an expanse of heavy pancake ice with formidable floes, creating an impenetrable barrier for the Terra Nova. This obstruction forced Scott and his team to endure months of isolation in a cave, surviving on meager rations and seal meat. The hardships they faced are palpable through this visual narrative. Scott's final expedition aimed not only to reach the South Pole but also to continue important scientific research initiated during his previous Antarctic voyage. Accompanied by a diverse group of experts including geologists, zoologists, surgeons, engineers, and more, Scott had ambitious goals for exploration and discovery. However, their dreams were shattered when they finally reached the South Pole on January 17th, 1912—only to discover that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had beaten them there by a month. Plagued by blizzards and dwindling supplies on their return journey, Scott and his remaining team members tragically perished at the end of March. It was eight long months before their bodies and diaries were discovered—an enduring testament to their bravery and sacrifice. This poignant image serves as a haunting reminder of both the harsh realities faced by early explorers like Scott and Ponting's skillful documentation of these historic events.
