Henry III at the battle of Lewes, 14th May 1264. Artist: Felix Henri Emmanuel Philippoteaux
King Henry III (1207-1272) at the battle of Lewes, 14th May 1264. The Battle of Lewes was one of two main battles of the conflict known as the Second Barons War. Henry III ruled England for fifty-six years from 1216 to his death. Medieval English monarchs did not use numbers after their names, and his contemporaries knew him as Henry of Winchester. He was the first child king in England since the Norman Conquest. Despite his long reign, his personal accomplishments were slim and he was a political and military failure. England, however, prospered during his century and his greatest monument is Westminster, which he made the seat of his government, and where he expanded the abbey as a shrine to Edward the Confessor. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history - King Henry III at the Battle of Lewes on 14th May 1264. Created by artist Felix Henri Emmanuel Philippoteaux, this artwork transports us back to the 13th century, immersing us in the intensity of conflict. Henry III, also known as Henry of Winchester, ruled England for an impressive fifty-six years from 1216 until his death. Despite being a child king and facing numerous political and military challenges, he left behind a lasting legacy. One of his greatest achievements was transforming Westminster into the seat of government and expanding the abbey as a tribute to Edward the Confessor. The Battle of Lewes itself was one of two major clashes during the Second Barons War. This engraving showcases King Henry III mounted on his horse amidst fierce fighting. It symbolizes both his position as monarch and his role as commander-in-chief during this tumultuous period. Alongside him stands Simon de Montfort, a key figure in English history who led rebellions against royal authority. Together, they represent opposing forces locked in battle for control over England's destiny. This monochrome masterpiece not only highlights the bravery and determination displayed by these medieval knights but also serves as a reminder that even though Henry III may have been considered a political failure by some standards, he played an instrumental role in shaping England's future.
