EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable architectural feature from the 16th century. Titled "Hercules, Bacchus, Pan, and Saturn" it is part of a series of eight compositions based on Francesco Primaticcio's designs for the ceiling of the Ulysses Gallery at Fontainebleau (which unfortunately no longer exists after its destruction in 1738-39). Created by Giorgio Ghisi during the 1560s, this engraving beautifully captures four prominent figures from Greek and Roman mythology. In this striking image, we see Hercules, Bacchus, Pan, and Saturn sitting together in an oval composition. Each deity is depicted with great attention to detail as they don their distinctive clothing and cloaks. The mannerist style employed by Ghisi adds an element of elegance to these mythological characters. The photograph transports us back in time to Château de Fontainebleau, a stately home that exudes grandeur and history. It serves as a testament to Italy's artistic influence during this period while showcasing Francesco Primaticcio's exceptional talent as a designer. Displayed within a museum setting today, this heritage art piece not only celebrates classical mythology but also highlights the skillful craftsmanship of both Primaticcio and Ghisi. With its monochromatic palette emphasizing light and shadow play against intricate architectural details on the ceiling paneling above them; it truly captivates viewers with its timeless beauty.
