Highest Camp in Antarctica - Active Crater, c1912, (1913). Artist: Raymond E Priestley
Highest Camp in Antarctica - Active Crater, c1912, (1913). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Highest Camp in Antarctica - Active Crater, c1912" takes us back to the final expedition of Captain Robert Falcon Scott, a British Antarctic explorer. In 1910, Scott embarked on the Terra Nova Expedition with a diverse team of scientists and experts. Their mission was twofold: to conduct scientific research and to be the first humans to reach the South Pole. The photograph showcases their highest campsite near an active crater, capturing both the harsh beauty and treacherous conditions of Antarctica. The artist behind this masterpiece is Raymond E Priestley, who was part of Scott's team as a photographer. However, fate had other plans for Scott and his companions. Despite their valiant efforts, they arrived at the South Pole on January 17th, 1912 only to discover that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had beaten them by a month. Trapped by blizzards and dwindling supplies during their return journey, tragedy struck in late March when all remaining members perished. Eight months later, their bodies were discovered along with poignant diaries that documented their heroic struggle against nature's forces. This haunting image serves as a testament to their indomitable spirit and unwavering pursuit of knowledge amidst unforgiving circumstances. Preserved from "Scotts Last Expedition". Volume II published in London in 1913 by Smith Elder & Co. , this print stands not just as an artistic marvel but also as a poignant reminder of human resilience in one of Earth's most extreme environments.
