EDITORS COMMENTS
"This striking photograph, taken by John Watkins in 1860, captures the reverent and distinguished appearance of The Hon. and Rev. Samuel Waldegrave, D.D., the newly appointed Bishop of Carlisle. The Bishop's jurisdiction extended over the regions of Cumberland, Westmorland, and parts of Lancashire. Notably, he was not entitled to a seat in the House of Lords until a vacancy arose in a diocese other than Canterbury, York, London, Winchester, and Durham. Dr. Waldegrave was a prolific writer and scholar, having authored a small volume of university sermons titled "The Way of Peace," and a larger work, "New Testament Millennarianism," which contained a clear and compassionate refutation of millenarian views of unfulfilled prophecy in the Bampton Lectures of 1854. The photograph, published in the Illustrated London News in 1860, showcases the Bishop's thoughtful and introspective demeanor. His attire, consisting of a collared shirt, waistcoat, and robe, adds to his ecclesiastical air. The image serves as a testament to the intellectual and spiritual leadership of this esteemed clergyman in 19th century Britain."
