Ice Crystals in Crevasse, June-July 1911, (1913). Artist: Charless Wright

Ice Crystals in Crevasse, June-July 1911, (1913). Microscope views showing ther formation of ice. Expedition physicist Charles Wright carried out experiments and observations on the physics of ice and snow, gravity, the aurora and magnetism, and assisted in meteorology research. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Ice Crystals in Crevasse, June-July 1911" by artist Charles Wright offers a mesmerizing glimpse into the formation of ice. Taken during the Terra Nova Expedition (1910-1913), led by renowned British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott, this image showcases the meticulous scientific work conducted by expedition physicist Charles Wright. Wright's experiments and observations focused on various aspects of polar exploration, including the physics of ice and snow, gravity, auroras, magnetism, and meteorology. As part of Scott's team that aimed to reach the South Pole for the first time in history, Wright played a crucial role in advancing our understanding of these natural phenomena. The photograph serves as a poignant reminder of Scott's ill-fated journey. Despite reaching their long-awaited destination on January 17th, 1912 after enduring treacherous conditions and dwindling supplies, they discovered that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had beaten them to it just one month earlier. Tragically delayed by blizzards and facing severe shortages, Scott and his remaining team members succumbed to their harsh surroundings at the end of March. Eight months later, their bodies were found along with their diaries - testaments to their unwavering determination and bravery in pursuit of scientific knowledge and exploration. This print is an invaluable historical artifact from Scott's Last Expedition (Volume II) published in 1913 by Smith Elder & Co. , offering us a glimpse into both the beauty and challenges encountered during this landmark Antarctic mission.
