An Ice-Free Outlet Valley, c1911, (1913). Artist: Frank Debenham

An Ice-Free Outlet Valley, Whose Glacier Has Receded Over Twenty Miles from the Sea. Looking South-West Up Dry Valley, c1911, (1913). Landmarks: Kukri Hills, Lake Bonney, Snout of Taylor Glacier. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume II. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "An Ice-Free Outlet Valley, c1911" by artist Frank Debenham, offers a glimpse into the awe-inspiring landscapes of Antarctica during the early 20th century. The image showcases an outlet valley that has been liberated from its icy grip, as the glacier receded over twenty miles from the sea. Looking south-west up the dry valley, one can admire prominent landmarks such as the Kukri Hills, Lake Bonney, and the snout of Taylor Glacier. The photograph is part of Scott's Last Expedition series and serves as a poignant reminder of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott's ill-fated journey to reach the South Pole. In 1910, Scott embarked on his final expedition with a diverse team of scientists and experts in various fields. Their mission was not only to conquer uncharted territories but also to conduct vital scientific research. Tragically, upon reaching their destination on January 17th, 1912, they discovered that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had beaten them to it by a month. Plagued by blizzards and dwindling supplies during their return journey, Scott and his remaining companions perished at the end of March. This haunting image encapsulates both the beauty and harshness of Antarctica while commemorating those who sacrificed their lives in pursuit of scientific discovery. It stands as a testament to human resilience in extreme environments and serves as a lasting tribute to Captain Scott's enduring legacy.
