An Ice Grotto - Tent Island in Distance (Captain Scott and Wright), c1911, (1913)

An Ice Grotto - Tent Island in Distance (Captain Scott and Wright), c1911, (1913). British Antarctic explorer and expedition leader Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) with physicist Charles Seymour Wright (1887-1975). Scotts final expedition left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume I. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the awe-inspiring beauty of an ice grotto, with Tent Island visible in the distance. The image features British Antarctic explorer and expedition leader Captain Robert Falcon Scott alongside physicist Charles Seymour Wright. Taken during Scott's final expedition, known as the Terra Nova Expedition (1910-1913), this photograph showcases the diverse team assembled for scientific exploration. Scott's ambition was twofold: to continue his scientific research from a previous Antarctic expedition and to become the first person to reach the geographic South Pole. Accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers, and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, Scott finally reached their long-awaited destination on 17 January 1912. However, their triumph quickly turned into heartbreak when they discovered that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had beaten them there by a month. Tragically delayed by blizzards and facing dwindling supplies, Scott and his remaining team members perished at the end of March. It would be eight months before their bodies were found along with their poignant diaries. This particular image is sourced from "Scott's Last Expedition". Volume I (Smith Elder & Co. , London 1913). It serves as a haunting reminder of both human resilience in extreme conditions and the unforgiving nature of Antarctica itself.
