EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an illustrated songsheet from the year 1831, offering a glimpse into the rich history and cultural significance of London. The left image portrays a momentous occasion as Gog and Magog, the revered guardians of the City of London, row a boat carrying King William IV and Queen Adelaide. Entitled "Going in state to open new London Bridge" this scene captures the grandeur and importance attached to such events during that era. On the right side of the songsheet, we witness a satirical depiction featuring the Duke of Wellington as a confident rooster striding away from John Key, who was elected Lord Mayor of London in 1830. This comical portrayal alludes to an incident known as "the fiasco of the cancelled banquet" that occurred in November prior to this illustration's creation. The intricate details and vibrant colors used in this artwork bring these historical figures to life while also highlighting their symbolic roles within society. With references ranging from mythology (Gog and Magog) to political satire (Duke of Wellington), this songsheet offers viewers a multifaceted perspective on nineteenth-century British culture. Preserved by Guildhall Library and Art Gallery, this remarkable piece serves as both an artistic treasure and valuable historical artifact. Its existence allows us to delve into past events with curiosity while appreciating how art can encapsulate moments for generations to come.
