EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a collection of implements and weapons used by the Manganja and Ajawa tribes of the Zambesi Country in Africa, dating back to 1864. The intricate details of each item tell a story of a people steeped in tradition and culture, whose way of life was vastly different from our own.
From the assegai or lance made of iron to the Ajawa bow, each weapon served a specific purpose in their daily lives. The horn for cupping and lancet speak to their medical practices, while the comb worn by women during dances adds a touch of adornment to their rituals.
The inclusion of musical instruments such as shells strung on metal plates highlights their love for music and rhythm. And the native knives made from hippopotamus tooth show their resourcefulness in utilizing materials found in their environment.
Overall, this print offers us a glimpse into the world of these African tribes who were once considered heathen barbarians but are now recognized for their rich cultural heritage. It is a reminder that despite our differences, we all share a common humanity that deserves respect and understanding.
