Inhabitants of the island of Sitka (northwest coast of America), 19th century. One of 65 lithographs that were included in the volume of maps published after the round-the-world voyage of the corvette Seniavin commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I and carried out in 1826-29 under the command of Captain Fedor Litke (the Russian version of the name of Count Friedrich Lu¨tke, a Baltic German). The expedition began in Kronstadt (the main imperial Russian naval base near Saint Petersburg where Russian circumnavigations typically began and ended); it then traveled around Cape Horn to the Pacific Ocean. This voyage was one of many Russian scientific naval surveys in the first part of the 19th century

EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white lithograph, titled 'Inhabitants of the Island of Sitka,' is an intriguing snapshot of a historical encounter between European explorers and the indigenous people of the Northwest Coast of America, specifically on the island of Sitka, during the 19th century. The image is one of 65 lithographs that were included in the volume of maps published after the round-the-world voyage of the Russian corvette Seniavin, commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I and carried out between 1826 and 1829 under the command of Captain Fedor Litke. The scene unfolds on the shores of Novo Arkhangelsk, a Russian settlement on Sitka Island. A group of Tlingit women and children are shown foraging for food, while a mother and her daughter observe the approaching European explorers in the background. The image, created by the collaborative efforts of three skilled artists - Friedrich Heinrich Kittlitz, Godefroy Engelmann, and Isidore Laurent Deroy - offers a fascinating glimpse into the meeting of frontiers between European and indigenous cultures. This lithograph, with its rich detail and nuanced portrayal of the people and landscape, is a testament to the artists' skill and the historical significance of the Seniavin expedition. The image is a valuable addition to any collection of historic art, showcasing the heritage of both Russian and American exploration and the complexities of the encounter between European and indigenous peoples on the North American frontier.
