Inhabitants of the island of Sitkha (northwest coast of America), 19th century. One of 65 lithographs that were included in the volume of maps published after the round-the-world voyage of the corvette Seniavin commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I and carried out in 1826-29 under the command of Captain Fedor Litke (the Russian version of the name of Count Friedrich Lu¨tke, a Baltic German). The expedition began in Kronstadt (the main imperial Russian naval base near Saint Petersburg where Russian circumnavigations typically began and ended); it then traveled around Cape Horn to the Pacific Ocean. EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph, titled 'Inhabitants of the Island of Sitkha,' is an intriguing glimpse into the lives of the indigenous people of the northwest coast of America during the 19th century. The image, created as part of a series of 65 lithographs published after the historic round-the-world voyage of the Russian corvette Seniavin, was produced by the collaborative efforts of three talented artists: Friedrich Heinrich Kittlitz, Godefroy Engelmann, and Isidore Laurent Deroy. Commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I and led by Captain Fedor Litke, the Seniavin expedition began in Kronstadt, Russia, and traveled around Cape Horn to the Pacific Ocean. This voyage was one of many scientific naval surveys carried out by Russia in the first part of the 19th century. The lithograph depicts a group of Sitkha island inhabitants, both male and female, carrying their children on their backs as they balance their way through the forest. The image captures a moment of daily life, as these individuals navigate the jungle terrain with grace and determination. The artists' meticulous attention to detail is evident in the intricate textures of the forest, the delicate features of the people, and the authenticity of their traditional attire. This evocative work of art, with its rich historical context, offers a captivating window into the lives of the indigenous peoples of the northwest coast of America during a time of discovery and encounter between different cultures. The 'Inhabitants of the Island of Sitkha' is a valuable addition to any collection of historic art, showcasing the beauty and diversity of the human experience.
