EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, titled "Inhabitants of the Seniavine Islands (discovered by Capt Lutka) (Caroline Islands) their ornaments and instruments," is an intriguing glimpse into the lives of the indigenous people of the Seniavine Islands during the 19th century. The image is one of 65 lithographs that were included in the volume of maps published after the historic round-the-world voyage of the corvette Seniavin. Led by Captain Fedor Litke, the expedition was commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I and began in Kronstadt, Russia, before traveling around Cape Horn to the Pacific Ocean. The Seniavine Islands, part of the Caroline Islands in the Pacific Ocean, were discovered during this voyage. The lithograph depicts a group of local inhabitants, both male and female, dressed in their traditional attire. The women are seen wearing grass skirts and intricately designed belts, while the men are adorned with body paint and carry various weapons, including cannons and other armaments. The photograph was created by renowned artists Alexander Postels and Godefroy Engelmann, who were part of the scientific team on board the Seniavin. Their meticulous attention to detail is evident in the intricate depiction of the people's ornaments and instruments. This photograph offers a valuable insight into the culture and heritage of the Seniavine Islanders during the 1820s, providing a fascinating record of a meeting of frontiers between European and indigenous worlds. This black and white lithograph, with its rich historical significance, is a testament to the importance of exploration and scientific discovery in the 19th century. It is a valuable addition to any collection of anthropology, ethnography, or art, and a reminder of the diverse and fascinating cultures that exist around the world.
