EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the legendary Isambard Kingdom Brunel, a prominent British engineer of the 19th century. Taken in 1857 by artist Robert Howlett, this image showcases Brunel standing proudly in front of the launching chains of his groundbreaking steamship, the Great Eastern. Brunel's remarkable career began when he joined his father on the construction of the Thames Tunnel after leaving school in 1822. From there, he went on to become chief engineer of the Great Western Railway and designed numerous iconic structures such as the Royal Albert Bridge and Clifton Suspension Bridge. Not only was Brunel an exceptional engineer, but he also had a flair for ship design. In addition to creating innovative bridges and viaducts, he crafted three revolutionary steamships: Great Western, Great Britain, and ultimately, Great Eastern. In this monochrome portrait captured by Howlett with meticulous detail and depth, we see Brunel exuding confidence while donning a top hat and enjoying a cigar—a symbol of his success and status during Victorian times. The image perfectly encapsulates both his brilliance as an inventor and his larger-than-life persona. This print from People magazine provides us with a glimpse into history—showcasing one man's immense contributions to engineering that shaped not only Britain but also transportation worldwide. It serves as a testament to Isambard Kingdom Brunel's enduring legacy as one of history's most celebrated engineers.
