Pale Blue Dot, Voyager 1

This unique narrow-angle color image is of the Earth, dubbed Pale Blue Dot, is a part of the first ever portrait of the solar system taken by Voyager 1. The spacecraft acquired a total of 60 frames for a mosaic of the solar system from a distance of more than 4 billion miles from Earth and about 32 degrees above the ecliptic. From Voyagers great distance Earth is a mere point of light, less than the size of a picture element even in the narrow-angle camera. Earth was a crescent only 0.12 pixel in size. Coincidentally, Earth lies right in the center of one of the scattered light rays resulting from taking the image so close to the sun. This blown-up image of the Earth was taken through three color filters -- violet, blue and green -- and recombined to produce the color image. The background features in the image are artifacts resulting from the magnification. EDITORS COMMENTS

This striking image, known as Pale Blue Dot, is a narrow-angle color portrait of Earth taken by the Voyager 1 spacecraft on February 14,1990. From a distance of over 4 billion miles (6.4 billion kilometers) and about 32 degrees above the ecliptic plane, Earth appears as a mere point of light, barely larger than a single pixel in the image. The tiny speck is a crescent shape, just 0.12 pixels in size. Coincidentally, Earth lies at the center of one of the scattered light rays in the image, created by taking the photograph so close to the sun. The image was captured using three color filters – violet, blue, and green – and combined to produce the final color image. The background features in the image are artifacts resulting from the magnification of the image. This iconic photograph is part of the first-ever portrait of the solar system taken by Voyager 1. It serves as a powerful reminder of our planet's tiny presence in the vastness of space. The image was taken during the 14th and final planetary encounter of Voyager 1, which began its interstellar journey in 1990. This photograph is a testament to the incredible achievements of space exploration and the human curiosity that drives it. It is a powerful symbol of our place in the universe and a reminder of the need to protect and cherish our planet, the pale blue dot, that is home to all known life.
