Kaffa Bay, 1854. Creator: Unknown
Kaffa Bay, 1854. Sketch by Lieutenant C. E. Gordon, Royal Engineers. The coast of the Crimea, as the scene of the operations of the Anglo-French troops [during the Crimean War], is at this moment a country of paramount interest. The Bay of Kaffa is one of the places reported as chosen for landing...A low sandy shore forms part of this bay, on the western side of which the town of Theodosia or Kaffa is built...Hagemeister, in his report on the Crimea, published in 1836, says, "The bay formed by the Black Sea at Theodosia is capable of giving shelter to a vast number of vessels, and is sheltered from the wind in all directions save the east; and even when the wind is in that quarter, partial security is afforded by the promontory at the entrance of the Gulf"'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

Kaffa Bay, 1854: A Scene of Strategic Importance During the Crimean War This sketch, created by Lieutenant C. E. Gordon of the Royal Engineers, depicts Kaffa Bay in 1854, a significant location during the Crimean War. The coastline of the Crimea was a focal point of interest at this time due to the military operations taking place in the region. The bay, located on the western side of the Black Sea, is renowned for its ability to shelter a vast number of vessels, as reported by Hagemeister in 1836. The low sandy shore and the town of Theodosia or Kaffa, built on the western side of the bay, are clearly visible in the image. The bay is sheltered from the wind in all directions except the east, offering partial security even when the wind is coming from that quarter. This natural harbor was of great importance for both military and commercial purposes, making it a strategic location during the Crimean War. The image shows several boats anchored in the bay, adding to the bustling atmosphere of the scene. The mountains in the background add to the picturesque landscape, making this an intriguing and historically significant snapshot of the Crimean coastline during a pivotal moment in history.
