EDITORS COMMENTS
This image, titled 'Kinburn - the "Curacoa" and "Tribune" Steam-frigates, and "Beagle" Gun-boat, in the Ice, 1856,' showcases an intriguing moment during the Crimean War, as British naval vessels attempt to navigate the treacherous Black Sea. The "Curacoa" and "Tribune" steam frigates, along with the "Beagle" gun-boat, are depicted in the foreground, surrounded by an expansive floe of ice. The scene is set against the backdrop of the Isle of Berezan and an extensive lake, from which the new gale likely brought the ice. The caption reveals that the Curacoa and Tribune had left for the Bosphorus on December 17, 1856, eager to depart from Kinburn Spit. The ships' captains, undoubtedly weary of the harsh winter conditions, are shown in the print trying to board their vessels. A small rowing boat can be seen in the distance, possibly attempting to ferry crew members to the stranded ships. The monochrome engraving, published in the Illustrated London News, offers a glimpse into the challenges faced by naval forces during the 19th century. The intricate details of the ships and the icy environment convey a sense of both beauty and danger, as the sailors braved the wintry conditions to carry out their duties. This print serves as a testament to the resilience and determination of the British Navy during the Crimean War, as they navigated the unforgiving waters of the Black Sea. The image, while its creator remains unknown, continues to fascinate and inspire, offering a unique perspective into a pivotal moment in naval history.
