EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece from the renowned collection of The Lewis Chessmen. Dating back to the 12th century, this Norwegian Knight is one of ninety-three chess pieces discovered at Uig on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland's Outer Hebrides. Crafted with exquisite detail, these ancient chessmen are made predominantly from Walrus ivory and a few from whale teeth. Intricately carved, this Knight stands as a testament to the artistic skill and craftsmanship of its creators. With its noble posture and mounted steed, it exudes an air of chivalry and strength. Its presence evokes images of medieval battles and epic quests that once captivated minds during board game sessions. The historical significance of these artifacts cannot be overstated. They offer us a glimpse into the pastime activities enjoyed by people in Celtic cultures during the Middle Ages. As we admire this artifact, we are transported back in time to an era when strategic thinking was honed through intense games played on ornate boards. Preserved within the British Museum's collection, The Lewis Chessmen continue to fascinate both historians and enthusiasts alike. This particular photograph captures not only their beauty but also their cultural importance as symbols of heritage and tradition. It serves as a reminder that even centuries-old objects can still ignite our imagination today.
