The late Lord Lyttelton, 1876. Engraving from a photograph by Mr. R.W. Thrupp, of Birmingham, of George William Lyttelton, fourth Lord Lyttelton of Frankley...After passing through Eton, his Lordship entered Trinity College, Cambridge, and was Chancellor's Medallist and Senior Classic in 1838. As a Greek scholar few equalled Lord Lyttelton. In 1837 he succeeded to the title at the death of his father, and held office as Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies in 1846. In 1840 he contested unsuccessfully the election of High Steward of Cambridge University, in 1845 was appointed Principal of Queen's College, Birmingham, and finally served as Chief Commissioner of Endowed Schools until the year 1874. He was Lord Lieutenant and Custos Rotulorum of the county of Worcester, High Steward of Bewdley, a member of the Privy Council'. From "Illustrated London News", 1876. This engraving is a tribute to the late George William Lyttelton, 4th Baron Lyttelton of Frankley (1817-1874), an esteemed aristocrat and scholar of his time. Born into nobility, Lyttelton attended Eton and later Trinity College, Cambridge, where he excelled academically, earning the Chancellor's Medallist and Senior Classic titles in 1838. His proficiency in Greek studies placed him among the leading scholars of the 19th century. Upon inheriting the title in 1837, Lyttelton held various prestigious positions, including Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies in 1846. He also contested the election for High Steward of Cambridge University in 1840, and later served as Principal of Queen's College, Birmingham, and Chief Commissioner of Endowed Schools until 1874. In addition, he held the titles of Lord Lieutenant and Custos Rotulorum of Worcester, High Steward of Bewdley, and was a member of the Privy Council.
