The late Mr. John Forster, 1876. Creator: Unknown
The late Mr. John Forster, 1876. British writer and journalist: He was editor of the "Examiner" during ten years, and for a short time of the "Daily News"...In 1870 Charles Dickens died. Mr. Forster had been his oldest friend; no one had known the great novelist so well; to no one had all the hopes and disappointments of his career been so fully revealed. With singular propriety, therefore, the literary remains of Dickens were confided to Mr. Forster, and to him was intrusted the care of writing his life. The biography appeared in three volumes in 1871 and 1874, and it cannot be doubted that Mr. Forster has done the best for his friend in this narrative of his life...In 1855 Forster was appointed Secretary to the Lunacy Commission...'. From "Illustrated London News", 1876

EDITORS COMMENTS
"This photograph depicts the late John Forster, a renowned British writer and journalist, in the year 1876. Forster's illustrious career began when he served as editor of the "Examiner" for a decade, followed by a brief tenure with the "Daily News." However, Forster is best known for his intimate friendship with the great novelist Charles Dickens, who died in 1870. Forster, who had known Dickens longer than any other individual, was entrusted with the literary remains of the beloved author and the responsibility of writing his biography. The three-volume biography, published in 1871 and 1874, is widely regarded as the most comprehensive and insightful account of Dickens' life. In 1855, Forster was appointed as the Secretary to the Lunacy Commission, further solidifying his reputation as a respected figure in British society. This evocative portrait, published in the "Illustrated London News" in 1876, serves as a poignant reminder of Forster's significant contributions to journalism, literature, and the historical record." This photograph is a testament to the remarkable life and accomplishments of John Forster, a man whose friendship with Charles Dickens and dedication to chronicling his life has left an indelible mark on literary history. The image, with its rich historical context, invites us to reflect on the importance of biography and the role it plays in preserving the legacies of influential figures. The photograph, though unattributed, is a valuable addition to any collection of historical art or artifacts.
