Leon Gambetta, French statesman, 1881
Leon Gambetta, French statesman, 1881. A Republican politician, Gambetta (1838-1882), was an opponent of the French Second Empire. In 1870 he proclaimed the Third Republic after Napoleon III was captured by the Prussians after the Battle of Sedan. Gambetta himself famously escaped from Paris in a hot air balloon when the city was besieged by the Prussians, rallying support for resistance to the invaders in the provinces. He was influential as the real leader of the republicans in politics in the first decade of the Third Republic, but did not actually hold office until a brief and unsuccessful period as premier in 1881-1882. A photograph from Album de Photographies dans L Intimite de Personnages Illustres, 1855-1915, 7th album, Editions MD, Paris

EDITORS COMMENTS
Leon Gambetta, French statesman, 1881. A powerful figure in the tumultuous era of the Third Republic, Leon Gambetta stands tall and resolute in this black and white portrait. With his commanding presence and distinguished beard, Gambetta exudes a sense of authority befitting his role as a Republican politician. Born in 1838, Gambetta rose to prominence during a time of political upheaval in France. In 1870, he played a pivotal role in proclaiming the Third Republic after Napoleon III's capture by Prussian forces at the Battle of Sedan. Faced with adversity during the Prussian siege of Paris, Gambetta famously escaped from the city using a hot air balloon to rally support for resistance against the invaders. Although influential as an unofficial leader within republican circles throughout the early years of the Third Republic, it was not until 1881-1882 that he briefly held office as premier. Despite his short tenure as prime minister being marked by limited success, Gambetta left an indelible mark on French politics through his unwavering commitment to republicanism. This photograph captures both the essence and significance of Leon Gambetta's contribution to French history. It serves as a poignant reminder of his determination and bravery during times of crisis while also showcasing his distinctive appearance that made him instantly recognizable among contemporaries. Preserved within this print collector's album from Editions MD Paris, this image offers us a glimpse into one man's journey towards shaping modern France.
