EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The Lewis Chessmen" a collection of exquisite medieval chess pieces believed to be of Norwegian origin. Dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries, these intricately carved artifacts were discovered in Uig on the Isle of Lewis, Scotland. Among the ninety-three pieces found are kings and queens seated regally, mitred bishops, mounted knights, vigilant warders, and obelisk-shaped pawns. Crafted predominantly from Walrus ivory with a few made from whale teeth, these chessmen offer a glimpse into the artistic craftsmanship of their time. In this image, we see two striking figures - a king and queen - who command attention with their majestic presence. The white color symbolizes purity while also representing royalty. Their intense gaze suggests an air of authority and wisdom that befits their regal stature. These chess pieces not only served as gaming tools but also reflected the cultural significance of religion during that era. Displayed against a backdrop reminiscent of medieval times, this photograph transports us to an enchanting world where strategic battles unfolded on checkered boards. It is through such relics that we can explore our rich historical heritage and appreciate the intricate details crafted by skilled artisans long ago
