Lieut. H. E. De P. Rennick, c1910–1913, (1913). Artist: Herbert Ponting

Lieut. H. E. De P. Rennick, c1910– 1913, (1913). Crew member Harry Rennick. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume I. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Lieut. H. E. De P. Rennick during the Terra Nova Expedition, led by British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott from 1910 to 1913. The expedition aimed to continue scientific research and be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Lieutenant Henry Rennick was a crew member of this historic journey, which included a diverse team of experts in various fields such as geology, zoology, surgery, photography, engineering, skiing, meteorology, and physics. On January 17th, 1912, Scott and his team comprising Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans finally reached the South Pole after enduring treacherous conditions and setbacks caused by blizzards. However, their triumph was short-lived as they discovered that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had already beaten them there a month earlier. Tragically delayed by severe weather conditions and dwindling supplies on their return journey from the pole; Scott and his remaining team members perished at the end of March. Their bodies were found eight months later along with their poignant diaries documenting their heroic struggle for survival. This evocative photograph is part of "Scott's Last Expedition" series captured by renowned photographer Herbert Ponting in 1913. It serves as a powerful reminder of both human resilience in extreme environments and the sacrifices made in pursuit of scientific discovery during one of history's most legendary polar expeditions.
