Lieut. H. R. Bowers - Birdie, January 1911, (1913). Lieutenant Henry Birdie Bowers (1883-1912) died on the way back from the South Pole with Scott and Wilson. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Lieutenant Henry Birdie Bowers, known as "Birdie" in January 1911 during the Terra Nova Expedition. Led by British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott, this expedition aimed to reach the South Pole and conduct scientific research. The team consisted of various experts, including geologists, zoologists, surgeons, photographers, engineers, ski experts, meteorologists, and physicists. Lieutenant Bowers tragically lost his life on the return journey from the South Pole alongside Scott and Dr Edward Wilson. Despite their valiant efforts to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole on 17 January 1912, they discovered that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had already achieved this feat a month earlier. In this image captured by photographer Herbert Ponting for Scott's Last Expedition publication in 1913 (Volume I), we see Lieutenant Bowers dressed in full sledging outfit at Glacier Tongue. His determined gaze reflects both his resilience and dedication to scientific exploration amidst harsh Antarctic conditions. The Terra Nova Expedition remains a significant chapter in polar exploration history. Although ultimately unsuccessful in reaching their goal of being first at the South Pole, Scott and his team's bravery continues to inspire generations with their unwavering spirit of adventure and pursuit of knowledge about our planet's most extreme environments.
