Lieutenant Evans in the Crows Nest, c1910–1913, (1913). Artist: Herbert Ponting

Lieutenant Evans in the Crows Nest, c1910– 1913, (1913). Edward Ratcliffe Garth Russell Teddy Evans (1880-1957), navigator and second in command, Captain of the Terra Nova, Lieutenant, Royal Navy. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume I. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Lieutenant Evans in the Crows Nest during the Terra Nova Expedition, led by Captain Robert Falcon Scott. Taken between 1910 and 1913 by renowned artist Herbert Ponting, this image showcases the determination and bravery of Edward Ratcliffe Garth Russell Teddy Evans. As navigator and second in command of the Terra Nova, Lieutenant Evans played a crucial role in this final expedition to Antarctica. The British Antarctic Expedition aimed not only to reach the South Pole but also to continue important scientific research initiated during Scott's previous voyage. Accompanied by a diverse team of experts including geologists, zoologists, surgeons, photographers, engineers, ski experts, meteorologists, and physicists among others; Scott's ambition was to uncover new knowledge about this remote region. However, upon reaching their destination on January 17th, 1912 - after enduring treacherous conditions - they discovered that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had already reached the South Pole a month earlier. Despite facing blizzards and dwindling supplies on their return journey from disappointment at missing their objective turned into tragedy when Scott and his remaining team members perished at the end of March. The bodies and diaries were discovered eight months later. This poignant photograph is part of "Scotts Last Expedition" collection published in Volume I by Smith Elder & Co. , London in 1913. It serves as a powerful reminder of both human resilience against nature's forces and the sacrifices made for scientific exploration.
