Lieutenant Forshaw throwing bombs continuously, Gallipoli, First World War, 1915, (c1920)
Lieutenant Forshaw throwing bombs continuously, Gallipoli, First World War, 1915, (c1920). Territorial Heroism on the Krithia Lines, August 8-9, 1915: how Lieutenant Forshaw, of the 9th Battalion Manchester Regiment, won the Victoria Cross, and saved his corner of the Vineyard. Lieutenant Forshaw smoked incessantly during this ordeal, in order to ignite the fuses of his bombs, which he threw continuously, says the " Gazette", for forty-one hours. William Thomas Forshaw (1890-1943) and his men threw hand grenades with fuses that had to be set alight, during the Battle of Krithia Vineyard on the Gallipoli peninsula in Turkey. Drawn by Philipp Dadd, who was killed on the Western Front in France in 1916. From " The Great World War - A History" Volume IV, edited by Frank A Mumby. [The Gresham Publishing Company Ltd, London, c1920]

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures a moment of Lieutenant Forshaw's heroic actions during the Battle of Krithia Vineyard on the Gallipoli peninsula in 1915. In this intense and dramatic scene, Lieutenant Forshaw is seen throwing bombs continuously to defend his corner of the Vineyard. The image showcases his unwavering bravery and determination as he tirelessly ignites the fuses of his hand grenades, saving lives and holding his ground against enemy forces. Lieutenant Forshaw's heroism is further emphasized by the fact that he smoked incessantly throughout this ordeal, using cigarettes to light the fuses of his bombs. This remarkable feat lasted for an astonishing forty-one hours, as reported by "The Gazette". His dedication to duty and selflessness in such dire circumstances exemplify true territorial heroism. William Thomas Forshaw, along with his fellow soldiers from the 9th Battalion Manchester Regiment, fought valiantly on the front lines during one of history's most devastating conflicts. The artist behind this poignant illustration is Philipp Dadd, who tragically lost his life on the Western Front in France just a year after creating this artwork. This photograph print serves as a testament to Lieutenant Forshaw's courage and sacrifice amidst the chaos and destruction of war. It stands as a powerful reminder of those who fought bravely during World War I and honors their enduring legacy.
