Lions, 1668. Creator: Sekkei Yamaguchi (Japanese, 1644-1732)
Lions, 1668. Sekkei lived and studied painting in Kyoto at the Kano school studio, the center of traditional painting activity in Japan since 1500. The use of gold foil as a backdrop for the frolicking animals served a practical as well as a decorative function. Because traditional Japanese rooms had no windows, interior lighting came from portable oil lamps and wax candles, whose effects were magnified by reflective surfaces

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Lions, 1668" by Sekkei Yamaguchi takes us back to the rich artistic traditions of Japan during the Edo period. The creator himself was a talented painter who studied at the renowned Kano school studio in Kyoto, which had been a hub for traditional painting since the 16th century. The image showcases a stunning display of ink and color on gilded paper, with six panels forming an exquisite folding screen. One cannot help but be drawn to the use of gold foil as a backdrop for these lively lions, which not only serves as decoration but also has practical purposes. During this era, Japanese rooms lacked windows and relied on portable oil lamps and wax candles for illumination. The reflective surfaces would have enhanced the luminosity created by these light sources. Heritage Art brings us this remarkable piece that exemplifies both technical skill and cultural significance. It allows us to appreciate how art seamlessly blended functionality with beauty in traditional Japanese interiors. As we gaze upon this artwork, we are transported to another time and place where nature's majesty is celebrated through masterful brushstrokes. Displayed at The Cleveland Museum of Art (not affiliated with any company), this print from Heritage Images captures the essence of Sekkei Yamaguchi's talent and offers us a glimpse into Japan's artistic heritage during one of its most vibrant periods.
