Tiger and Leopard, 1668. Creator: Sekkei Yamaguchi (Japanese, 1644-1732)

Tiger and Leopard, 1668. Sekkei lived and studied painting in Kyoto at the Kano school studio, the center of traditional painting activity in Japan since 1500. The use of gold foil as a backdrop for the frolicking animals served a practical as well as a decorative function. Because traditional Japanese rooms had no windows, interior lighting came from portable oil lamps and wax candles, whose effects were magnified by reflective surfaces

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite artwork titled "Tiger and Leopard" created by Sekkei Yamaguchi in 1668. As a prominent artist of the Edo period, Sekkei studied painting at the renowned Kano school studio in Kyoto, which was considered the epicenter of traditional Japanese artistry for centuries. The use of gold foil as a backdrop not only adds an enchanting decorative touch but also serves a practical purpose. During this era, traditional Japanese rooms lacked windows, relying on portable oil lamps and wax candles for illumination. The reflective surfaces of this gilded paper intensify the luminosity created by these light sources. In this six-panel folding screen masterpiece, we witness two majestic animals frolicking together in harmonious motion. The intricate ink and color work beautifully captures their grace and power while showcasing Sekkei's mastery of his craft. This Heritage Art piece offers us a glimpse into Japan's rich artistic heritage during the Edo period (1615-1868). It is housed within The Cleveland Museum of Art collection, ensuring its preservation for future generations to appreciate and admire. Let yourself be transported to another time as you marvel at this remarkable creation by Sekkei Yamaguchi – an embodiment of Japan's cultural legacy captured through paintbrush strokes on gilded paper.
