Summer and Winter Landscapes (one of a pair), 1600s. Creator: Kano Naonobu (Japanese, 1607-1650)

Summer and Winter Landscapes (one of a pair), 1600s. This sparse composition depicts a summer scene on the right and a winter scene on the left. Careful observation reveals that the pair of screens was once damaged, and a later conservation including new sections of paper and inpainting sought to preserve the original flavor of the paintings so they could continue to be appreciated. Kano Naonobu was born in Kyoto, the younger brother of major painter and authenticator Kano Tan yu (1602-1674). He relocated to Edo (present-day Tokyo) at the behest of the Tokugawa government in 1630 where he worked with his brother and teacher. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a pair of Summer and Winter Landscapes, created by the talented Japanese artist Kano Naonobu in the 1600s. The composition is beautifully sparse, with a summer scene depicted on the right panel and a winter scene on the left. Upon closer examination, one can notice that these screens have undergone some damage over time. However, an expert conservation effort was undertaken to preserve their original essence. New sections of paper were added and careful inpainting was done to ensure that these paintings could continue to be appreciated for generations to come. Kano Naonobu was born in Kyoto and was the younger brother of renowned painter Kano Tan yu. He moved to Edo (present-day Tokyo) in 1630 at the request of the Tokugawa government, where he collaborated with his brother and teacher. Notably, he contributed his artistic skills to important projects such as Nijo Castle in Kyoto and Chion Temple, a significant Pure Land Buddhist temple. This particular artwork belongs to the Edo period (1615-1868) and is executed using ink on gold and silver decorated paper. It is housed in The Cleveland Museum of Art's collection as part of its heritage art display. Heritage Images has captured this exquisite piece through their print reproduction service, allowing art enthusiasts worldwide to appreciate Kano Naonobu's masterful depiction of contrasting seasons within this six-panel folding screen format from ancient Japan.
