Her Majesty's New Castle of Balmoral, 1854. Creator: Unknown
Her Majesty's New Castle of Balmoral, 1854. View of the north-east front of Queen Victoria's royal residence in Scotland, ...as it will appear when finished...The design consists of a massive square tower, about 100 feet in height, flanked on two sides by large squares of building, three stories and upwards in height...The new buildings...are erected wholly of beautiful grey granite...The design displays, in many parts, masses of beautifully and carefully detailed carvings and enriched mouldings, such as are seldom wrought in obdurate, but enduring material like granite...it is not expected that these, or the other square of buildings, which is mainly intended for the accommodation of the domestics, can be finished for at least two years to come; so that the old Castle, shown in the background of the view, will be required for the accommodation of her Majesty's suite during that interval'. Her Majesty's New Castle of Balmoral, 1854: A Vision of Regal Grandeur This photograph print depicts Her Majesty's New Castle of Balmoral, Scotland, as it was envisioned in 1854. The image showcases the north-east front of Queen Victoria's royal residence, with the caption assuring us that this is 'as it will appear when finished.' The design boasts a grand, square tower, standing proudly at approximately 100 feet in height, flanked on either side by large squares of building, reaching three stories and upward. The new structures, erected wholly of beautiful grey granite, display an intricate and exquisite level of detail. In many parts, the design showcases masses of carefully crafted carvings and enriched mouldings, a testament to the artisanship of the time. However, it is important to note that these, and the other square of buildings, primarily intended for the accommodation of domestic staff, were not expected to be completed for at least two years. The old Castle, visible in the background of the view, is therefore required to house her Majesty's suite during this interval. This photograph offers a glimpse into the grand vision of Balmoral Castle's transformation, a testament to the enduring allure of royal architecture and the craftsmanship of the Victorian era.
