EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled "Manchurian and Korean," is a striking image from the collection of 154 photographs taken by local photographer V.V. Lanin in the Far East between 1865 and 1871. The Imperial Public Library of St. Petersburg received this album as a gift from merchant V.P. Myl'nikov upon his return from the Amur region. The photograph features two individuals, an elderly Manchurian man and a young Korean woman, dressed in their traditional attire. The Manchurian man wears a long, flowing robe, with a wide-brimmed hat adorned with intricate designs, while the Korean woman dons a beautiful hanbok, a traditional Korean dress, with a brightly colored kimono-style top and a long, flowing skirt. The meeting of these two individuals from different ethnic backgrounds and regions of Northeast Asia is a testament to the rich cultural diversity of the Far East during the 19th century. The photograph captures the defiance and strength of the subjects, their proud posture and unwavering gaze, making it a powerful representation of their heritage and identity. The oval-shaped image, with its black and white tones, is a timeless piece of anthropological and historical significance. It offers a glimpse into the clothing and fashion of the time, as well as the meeting of frontiers and the blending of cultures in the Far East. This photograph is a valuable addition to any collection of Asian art, ethnography, or history, and a reminder of the importance of preserving and celebrating the diverse cultural heritage of the world.
