EDITORS COMMENTS
This maquette, or model, is a stunning representation of the decorative scheme for the Chapelle des Morts, or Chapel of Souls, in the Église Notre-Dame-de-Lorette in Paris, created by Merry Joseph Blondel around 1836. The neoclassical design showcases a harmonious blend of architecture, urbanism, and art. At the center, the triune deity - God the Father, Christ, and the Virgin Mary - is depicted in regal splendor. The Father is shown in a cloud throne, with a golden nimbus encircling his head. Christ, as the Antiphonetes, or judge of the dead, stands with an open book and a scepter, while the Virgin Mary, the Mother of God, is surrounded by angels. Angels of the Last Judgment are scattered throughout the model, their wings outstretched as they prepare to usher souls into the afterlife. Musical angels, depicted with various instruments, are also present, symbolizing the celestial harmony and joy that awaits the faithful. The resurrection of Christ is depicted on the tympan of the entrance, with the Savior emerging triumphantly from the tomb. The model also includes the martyrdom of a saint, likely Saint Lorette, the patron saint of the church. This intricately detailed maquette, with its gilded surfaces and vibrant colors, is a testament to the rich artistic and cultural heritage of 19th-century France. It provides a glimpse into the interior design and decoration of this important Parisian institution, offering a glimpse into the world of neoclassical art and the enduring power of religious iconography.
